Eric Hansen:
Good afternoon. We're live, really, and ready to rock Notre Dame football chat with you this afternoon. Please forgive the occasional interruptions -- and please no spitting, no swearing, no biting, no bare feet and no wagering. Please include your hometown and name with your question. We'll be giving away semi-fabulous prizes at the end -- 4 copies of the 2011 ISR Notre Dame football annual. So check the transcript later if you have to hop off early. Without further patter, off we go?

Hi Eric! Big fan! What have you seen of Dan Fox that pushed him ahead of Carlo, knowing that his starting spot can change if he slips?
Thursday August 25, 2011 12:06 Shaun from Granger, IN
12:12
Eric Hansen:
Notre Dame had two incomplete players last spring competing for the position. Calabrese struggled with pass coverage, Fox with run fits. It was a race to see who could better evolve into that complete player. Fox, a former high school safety, didn't have the skill set to take on 300-pound offensive guards firing out at him so close to the line of scrimmage. He has really gotten comfortable with that. I think both players will play.

[Comment From GuestGuest: ]
Hey Eric, do you think the trend that ND has going on offense with time of possession being so low is a good recruiting tool for defensive recruits or not? I think the more PT the better, but wondering what you think about this.
Thursday August 25, 2011 12:12 Guest
12:14
Eric Hansen:
I don't think they'll necessarily be able to use it as a recruiting tool, and I'm not sure that time of possession will be so imbalanced this season. I think there may be times Brian Kelly wants to slow things down, and he has a team now that can play at different speeds.

how do you think cierre will do this season if he remains healthy?

Eric Hansen:
Lydia, I think Cierre is a wild card. With how much he has embraced doing the little things, with how much his confidence has soared and how hard he worked in the weight room, I would not be surprised to see him become a 1,000-yard rusher. Part of that too is how much Kelly has embraced the run game.

Hi Eric. Thanks for doing this again. Any insight into Rees' response to being the backup?
Thursday August 25, 2011 12:16 Roger, Dallas
12:17
Eric Hansen:
Roger, we have not had a chance to talk to Tommy during the decision, but from all accounts, he is ready to embrace the role. Remember, in the past, whenever Rees has met adversity, he's used it to drive him to get better.

[Comment From Adam, IndyAdam, Indy: ]
Eric, thanks for doing the chats and posting the scripts after. Haven't been able to catch the last few. I liked your questions about Cierre helping the freshman backs the other day. In school i found I retained the subject matter better when I would help another student. Do you think we can expect better pass protection from Cierre now that he is the teacher?
Thursday August 25, 2011 12:17 Adam, Indy
12:20
Eric Hansen:
Thanks, Adam. Cierre really made strides with that throughout the season, and he is very proud of it. He will tell you, "I don't get yelled at about that anymore." If Cierre can stay healthy, as Lydia alluded to, I think you'll see a complete back and a breakout season for him.

[Comment From Jeff from Fort WayneJeff from Fort Wayne: ]
BK went from a screamer on the sidelines to a teacher as the year progressed in 2010. We haven't had a teacher since Coach Holtz , and later, Joe Moore, left ND. Am I wrong?
Thursday August 25, 2011 12:20 Jeff from Fort Wayne
12:23
Eric Hansen:
I'm not sure I would agree with the gap in teaching on the sidelines. I think Charlie Weis did quite a bit of that with Jimmy Clausen and Brady Quinn. Having said that, I do think BK evolved a lot in his sideline demeanor. He did what he thought was necessary at the time. I think he understands at this stage of Dayne's and Tommy's development lower decibels work better.

[Comment From Mark from Granger, INMark from Granger, IN: ]
Last year the Irish had a rash of hamstring injuries, this year none. What have they done different this year to prevent those?
Thursday August 25, 2011 12:24 Mark from Granger, IN
12:27
Eric Hansen:
Mark, it's not something Brian Kelly has been expansive about, but one of the chatsters sent me an article last week, written by strength coach Paul Longo when he was at Cincinnati. It really explained well the inherent muscular problems/weaknesses some kids have going from high school to college -- that cause injuries. To take it a step further, I inferred that could also happen going from one training philosophy to another as ND did last year. If I get a more definitive response from Kelly. I will certainly pass it along.

[Comment From Luther, Downingtown, PALuther, Downingtown, PA: ]
Eric, I am very excited for the upcoming season and I think it is mostly due to a bigger, deeper, stronger and faster defense. For the 1st time in memory, the defense appears to stacked with athletes. Who do you see really having an impact on that side of the ball outside of Teo and will the secondary have enough depth and quality talent to play at the high level they finished the year?
Thursday August 25, 2011 12:28 Luther, Downingtown, PA
12:30
Eric Hansen:
I think ND is pretty solid in its depth at safety with McCarthy, Motta and Collinsworth. At corner, there's a dropoff to Bennett Jackson and Lo Wood, but those guys get better every day. As long as you don't have to dip into the true freshmen, I think the Irish will be OK there. Outside of Te'o, the starters I think will surprise the college football world are the two outside linebackers -- Shembo and Fleming. I think a number of backups will have big impact as well -- Lynch, Tuitt, Niklas to name a few.

[Comment From Chris Charlottesville, VAChris Charlottesville, VA: ]
Eric, the articles Sunday were great. There was a story up in SI.com about Mark Cuban and some proposed changes he has for the BCS. These would include non-qualifiers and independants as well as conferences who don't have a championship game to have a one -off for the final 2 BCS slots. Do you think ND would have any interest in that? Do you think it's even reasonable?
Thursday August 25, 2011 12:31 Chris Charlottesville, VA
12:33
Eric Hansen:
Mark Cuban and the BCS? Wow, there's a combination that goes together like ketchup and licorice. I did not see the article, so it's harder for me to comment. But based on what you relayed to me, I don't think it's something that would interest Notre Dame. Why would you raise the bar for yourself. All the Irish have to do right now is be in the top 14 in the BCS standings to be in the pool.
Thursday August 25, 2011 12:33 Eric Hansen

[Comment From Jason ChicagoJason Chicago: ]
The South Florida fans seem very confident that they will be able to come in and beat Notre Dame. Personally, it has the feeling of the Nevada opener where ND fans were worried but come out well on top.
Thursday August 25, 2011 12:33 Jason Chicago
12:35
Eric Hansen:
I think USF fans have a lot to be proud of. That's a program that has come light years in a very, very short amount of time. I think where the Bulls will be challenged, though, is the ability to be able to score points against ND's defense. The point spread is 10 points in ND's favor, and that sounds about right to me.

[Comment From Newt in Washington DCNewt in Washington DC: ]
Love the chats!!! Rough week on the east coast....Earthquake on Tues and Hurricane Irene suppose to hit on Sat...and the only thing I can think about is our depth chart and the South Florida game next week! Anywho, I have two questions. 1. According to the depth charts, Theo Riddick and Barrett Jackson will be the return men. Did Coach Kelly talk about that any? Because I didnt hear it in any of the interviews. and 2. This time a year I watch all the film from last season, and watching the Tulsa game, it still bothers me that he called a pass play vs just lining up for the field goal with a very capiable kicker....did Coach Kelly ever try to justify the call and more so, does that bother anyone else as much as me?
Thursday August 25, 2011 12:36 Newt in Washington DC
12:39
Eric Hansen:
Newt, our thoughts and prayers are with you buddy. Kelly did confirm that Riddick and Bennett Jackson will be deep on kickoffs. He could change his mind, now, but having auditioned the freshmen already, probably not. As far as the Tulsa game, BK did justify the decision. However, later on, I think I believe he distanced himself from that assertion in sport of a veiled reference about coaching mistakes. I'll give him credit. He is not afraid to talk about lessons learned, and I think he learned one that day.

[Comment From Lumpy from CincinnatiLumpy from Cincinnati: ]
Eric, is Shembo a possibility at a middle linebacker spot based on his body size (while also enabling his outside linebacker slot for a taller freshman or two)?
Thursday August 25, 2011 12:40 Lumpy from Cincinnati
12:42
Eric Hansen:
Lumpy, I love the name, buddy. Perhaps Shembo could move inside post-Manti Te'o, especially if that were to happen after this season. However, he is so good with his reads, so good on the edge, so good in pass coverage, it would be a tough decision to consider it.

[Comment From Stanley Watkins - ChesterStanley Watkins - Chester: ]
Which of the two younger quarterbacks do you see playing in a special package this year?
Thursday August 25, 2011 12:42 Stanley Watkins - Chester

If BK had to commit to one, and I think he would, I would bet Everett Golson.

[Comment From Brian in IndyBrian in Indy: ]
Have you heard any news on Kerry Neal making the Colts squad? Also, do you see Atkinson moving to the Riddick role once the Irish get some more depth at RB in coming years? Thank so much.
Thursday August 25, 2011 12:43 Brian in Indy
12:47
Eric Hansen:
I have to admit I haven't had a chance to follow the Irish in the pros as much as I'd like to, but I've heard great things about Kerry in preseason games. As far as Atkinson, even if ND recruited say, two elite RBs this cycle, that would leave you with Cierre, Cam McDaniel, and two freshmen in 2012. The wild card is Cam Roberson. How will he respond after two torn knee ligaments and a year away from football? If he bounces back, I think it's easier to move Atkinson to wide receiver. I read that situation as fluid, and one that won't consider examining until next winter or spring.

[Comment From Cory From Troy, MICory From Troy, MI: ]
It seems every year Notre Dame starts out playing a rough schedule and then softens big time in the back end, any chance they start trying to play army week 1 to get at least one week tune up?
Thursday August 25, 2011 12:47 Cory From Troy, MI
12:50
Eric Hansen:
Scheduling is tricky because of having to pull teams away from conference play on November. Only a limited pool of schools are willing to do that. Stanford's rise has helped with that situation. BYU being an independent theoretically will too. As far as putting Army at the front, I'm not sure playing an option team in week 1, then going to play a traditional offense in Michigan in week 2 is going to be an improvement. Unless the Big Ten schools agree to play later in the season at some point in the future, the rhythm of ND's schedule is fairly locked in -- at least at the start.

It hard being an irish fan down here in gator country, that being said, what can the irish do this season to make the haters out there finally admit that ND is relevant to the college football world.

Defensively ND looks solid for next years recruiting class. How close is ND in brining in skill position players, namely RB's?
Thursday August 25, 2011 12:51 Bobo - PA
12:52
Eric Hansen:
Bobo,
They've got a bunch of them lined up for visits in the coming weeks. If the Irish can grab a couple of them, that will really help this class.

[Comment From Jude- Sandusky, OHJude- Sandusky, OH: ]
With the lack of depth at CB and three very talented safeties, it is no secret that the nickel back will be Slaughter/Motta. Slaughter has been named the starter, but coach Kelly has said this will be a fluid rotation. Do you see one of these two (Slaughter or Motta) being more suited for the nickel back position that Robert Blanton filled so well last year?
Thursday August 25, 2011 12:53 Jude- Sandusky, OH
12:53
Eric Hansen:
I like Motta as the nickel. He can cover. He can play the run well. He can rush the passer if you want to change things up with your nickel coverage/

[Comment From David in ColumbusDavid in Columbus: ]
Eric love these chats, what scholarship upper classmen have been moved to scout team? I ask b/c I am interested in Filer and where he is on the 2 deep.
Thursday August 25, 2011 12:54 David in Columbus
12:57
Eric Hansen:
I don't have a complete list, but I think you could guess some of them, based on the depth chart. To your point about Filer, I think he'll be a valuable situational player. Remember in the spring game, when they lined him up to rush the passer on the same side of the field as Aaron Lynch? That was a dynamic combination. Often teams will removed a bigger end, say Kapron Lewis-Moore, when they drop into nickel and dime and replace him with a smaller, faster pass rusher like Filer. I would think the scout team OLBs would be people like Councell and Rabasa.

[Comment From Bobby, Nashville TNBobby, Nashville TN: ]
Hey Eric, Super pumped for the season to start I'll be watching from a hotel bar in the Dominican...My question is on the WR position...What has Daviaris Daniels done to move himself ahead players like Toma,Goodman,Walker?? I'm really excited to see him play this year
Thursday August 25, 2011 12:57 Bobby, Nashville TN
12:59
Eric Hansen:
I'm not sure he's ahead of Goodman or Toma. He's in their tier. What he does well is uses his body well to shield the ball from corners. He also has nice acceleration into his routes. What he has to work on are the nuances -- route precision, reading defenses, blocking on run plays.

[Comment From Moose, Ottawa, CanadaMoose, Ottawa, Canada: ]
When you're interviewing ND players, who are presumably mostly young kids at heart, what do you do to avoid getting one-word answers, and trifles like "we just have to get better every day".
Thursday August 25, 2011 1:03 Moose, Ottawa, Canada
1:05
Eric Hansen:
I think a couple of things Moose. First of all, don't ask them yes and no questions. Secondly, do some homework on them. Find out about them before you talk to them. I usually try to get them laughing a bit, just to make things not so formal. My kids are their age, and that helps a lot. Now if I could just get my kids to give me as eloquent answers.

[Comment From WeekdaySportsbeatSuperfanWeekdaySportsbeatSuperfan: ]
Eric, I love weekday Sportsbeat. You and Darrin do an amazing job at analyzing sports, particularly Notre Dame football. Do you remember a caller asked a question about three weeks ago concerning the ND/Michigan game jerseys. His question was something like "how can Michigan wear jerseys with reduced sized numbers on the chest and a giant 'M' on the torso without violating NCAA standards?" Did you ever find an 'official' answer to that gentleman's question? I thought it was an interesting point and had not heard any discussion since. Thanks for all you do. I cannot wait to hear the show tonight.

Any big time recruits in town for USF weekend?
Thursday August 25, 2011 1:09 Jason from Chicago

Eric Hansen:
So far, the BIG weekend appears to be USC. A lot can change. We'll publish a full list when it gets closer to game day, but early indications from Tom Lemming/Bob Wieneke are that ASU commit Evan Goodman (off. lineman) and uncommitted WR Ian Thomas are on the guest list.

[Comment From Chris (Durham NC)Chris (Durham NC): ]
Eric -- thanks for your great coverage. It seems like ND has had success recruiting in North Carolina in the past few years. Do you see that as a trend that will continue, especially with the trouble down the road at UNC?
Thursday August 25, 2011 1:11 Chris (Durham NC)
1:13
Eric Hansen:
I think ND has found an area rich in talent and where kids don't mind leaving the state. New Jersey has a similar dynamic. There's not a ton or pressure to "stay home." I absolutely think ND is going to continue to be involved with players in the Carolinas.

Hey Eric....Good stuff here...thanks for taking the time. What do you think is the over/under on points for the offense in the game against USF? Think the defense scores a touchdown?
Thursday August 25, 2011 1:13 Stan from Greenwood, IN
1:15
Eric Hansen:
We're treading dangerously close to Miss Cleo territory with that question, and if I'm asked psychic questions, I'm going to have to charge psychic prices. My best clairvoyant read is ND will win 27-16 and score on a special teams TD.

[Comment From Matt - PhiladelphiaMatt - Philadelphia: ]
With the impressive depth at TE and the appearance that Koyack will play this year, is there any talk of 3 TE sets in the spread. The thought intrigues me though I don't know if it has been tried before or mentioned by BK. What do you think of the idea? Love the thought of the 3 TEs, Floyd split out and Riddick in the backfield, how do you defend that?
Thursday August 25, 2011 1:15 Matt - Philadelphia
1:16
Eric Hansen:
I can see the possibility of three TE sets around the goal line and in short yardage at times. It's another weapon and brings more versatility to this offense. It's not an option Kelly has at Cincinnati.

Eric, did you hear Dayne's response at the press conference a couple of days ago about a fifth year of eligibility? To me it sounded like something he wasn considering. Did you take it that way?
Thursday August 25, 2011 1:16 Todd P - Perrysburg, OH
1:18
Eric Hansen:
That is a hard read for me. Knowing him pretty well, this is how I would interpret it. This is a guy that takes nothing for granted. So he's not going to assume he will be invited back for a fifth year. He's had to fight for everything he's gotten and he'll fight for that if/when the time comes. Right now he is so focused on THIS season, he doesn't want anything to detract from that.

Eric, great chats! Can you tell me, what kid of defense do you see us playing this year, more blitzing and 7 & 8 people in the box leaving DBs 1 on 1 or more of a zone coverage and let our D- line and people like Shembo and Lynch go after the QB? Also, who is the next recruit sitting out there about to committ?
Thursday August 25, 2011 1:19 Matt (So. CA)
1:22
Eric Hansen:
Matt. I am AWFUL when it comes to predicting which recruit will commit next. I do think it will be a running back. I hope that helps. As to the defense? I think ND is going to be much more multiple than the Irish were last year. I think they can get a lot more push up front without having to blitz, but they won't be afraid to mix that in. I think you'll see some interesting packages and personnel combinations. I would not want to be an opposing offensive coordinator.

You have Notre Dame 3-1 in their first four games... which game do you think they will lose and why?
Thursday August 25, 2011 1:22 Alec, MI
1:23
Eric Hansen:
Michigan State, and it's a gut feeling. The Michigan game (should the Irish win) will be very emotional, a tough game to come down from. However, Kelly said this is the most focused team he has EVER had, so 4-0 might be realistic. We'll see.

Curious about managing the 2012 recruits the rest of the way in. Do the coaches tell kids with offers and who want to accept the offer "No" if they are waiting on somebody else to accept? Just wondering how we get the best recruits the rest of the way in.
Thursday August 25, 2011 1:24 Patrick from Memphis
1:26
Eric Hansen:
The short answer is you slow-play the kids lower on your priority list. You wait from the great ones. You also sometimes have to put expiration dates on offers. If you have two similar kids and have one spot for them, you take the kid who commits first, then pull the other offer. That happened recently when DLSheldon Day committed. It's quite strategic, let me tell you.

Always enjoy the chats although I seldom find it possible to participate, my bad. How about our home town boy Jonas Gray? First it seemed unquestioned that Cierre would be the starter with Gray playing appropriate downs. Now seems a lot of buzz over Jonas and his new attitude.
Thursday August 25, 2011 1:26 Detroit Dave

I still think Cierre will start and Jonas will complement him. If ND can get some consistency out of Jonas, and they have in August, this is a dangerous tandem.

Do you think that there will be any transfers from the QB position and if so who?
Thursday August 25, 2011 1:28 Titus

Eric Hansen:
Certainly not during the season, perhaps not even next spring. A lot of whether a QB transfers has to do with two things -- how the kid's parents handle the situation (their ego) and whether the coach is fair in terms of providing opportunity to move up the depth chart.

[Comment From Mark from Granger, INMark from Granger, IN: ]
Eric, What do think will be the percentage of 3-4 vs. 4-3 on defense? I'm sure a lot will be dictated by down and distance and the team they are playing, but they seem to have so many good linemen that the 4-3 would make a lot of sense.
Thursday August 25, 2011 1:32 Mark from Granger, IN
1:34
Eric Hansen:
Mark, ND was in 4-3 (four down linemen, three linebackers) 48 percent of the time last year. Running against a 3-4 on first and second downs is tough. I see that percentage going down a bit this year... maybe 40-60 in the 4-3, but that flexibility to do both is one of the things that makes this defense so potent.

You are scared because of unresolved abandonment issues? No wait, that's what Oprah would say. You are scared because their defense is really good and their coach is really good and you've seen teams like UConn and Tulsa come into ND Stadium and not be intimidated. Now the good news, I think USF is going to really labor to score. And I don't think this team is going to look ahead to Michigan. As an aside, I'm not sure Michigan is better than USF.

Hi Eric, not a lot of talk about riddick this year, but he seems to be in the most important possition to make this offense go. How did his spring go and the development of the position as slot receiver?

Riddick had to think everything through last year. Am I in the right route? Am I making the right read? Do I cut at 12 or 15 yards? That robotic process is behind him now, and you'll see a more fluid, more dangerous player on the field this year, I believe.

Eric, A year ago this time one of the biggest concerns was the O-line. Today the O-line seems to be the team's strength. What do you attribute this change to?
Thursday August 25, 2011 1:49 Titus, Seattle, WA
1:54
Eric Hansen:
There's a few layers here. 1) I give a lot of credit to O-line coach Ed Warinner. He replaced a popular position coach and the players were slow to warm up to both him and his methods. He handled that situation brilliantly, holding fast to some principles but being a good listener and finding compromise with others. 2) The improvement of Braxston Cave at center. It can't be overstated how much that changed things. 3) Zack Martin is a stud.

Nick, there have not been any major changes this fall. Some from the spring/summer are Mathias Farley from S to WR, Bennett Jackson from WR to CB, Austin Collinsworth from WR to S, Brad Carrico from DE to OL, Bruce Heggie from DE to OL. Jackson is the most significant one there. Two subtle ones this fall: Tony Springmann from DE to NG and Troy Niklas from DE to OLB. Both of those guys are in the mix for playing time.

My math is bad, so I'm assuming the next question is still to come. I think ND's defense will be better than it left off, because there's more depth up front and a better option at the drop linebacker.

Eric Hansen:
ND needs to get South Florida out of the way first. As for Michigan, Denard Robinson is a spectacular player. Part of his success last year, though, was taking advantage of ND's weakness at outside linebacker, especially in the deciding drive of the game. ND is much, much better there, but I still think it's going to be a heck of a game. Urban Meyer was on a teleconference earlier today talking about how much Michigan's defense had improved.

John, if everything fell perfectly, they could go 12-0, but I just don't think it will happen. I think BCS is realistic. I picked them to go 9-3. We'll know a lot more about ND's offense after So. Florida and a lot more about its defense after Michigan.

The second question is: How much of the QB competition was invented by Kelly to keep Rees here? I'm wondering if the competition was really as close as Kelly was describing. What's your take?
Thursday August 25, 2011 2:08 John from oregon
2:10
Eric Hansen:
I don't think it was an invention. Tommy Rees went 4-0, and even though the defense and the running game were much improved during that stretch than when DC was playing, the team needed to see on the practice field who No. 1 was. I do think Kelly is purposely positive with his comments about Rees in part to keep him invested, but I don't think he's blowing smoke. Now LAST YEAR, when Kelly was trying to concoct a competitive QB battle, I was not buying any of it.

Thursday August 25, 2011 2:14 Arez from Philippines
2:17
Eric Hansen:
Arez. That's a lot of info packed in a tight little paragraph. Are you trying to take my job? Kelly is mum about who has the advantage between Golson and Hendrix. My gut feeling is we'd see Golson as the "package" quarterback and Hendrix will focus more on learning the entire offense. As I wrote last week, Jack Swarbrick expects the Miami series to go on as planned -- but they'll monitor the situation. SEC opponent? I think you'll see that in a bowl game before you'd see it on a regular-season schedule. ND network? it's evolving.

I think it's a testament to the prowess of those players to be recruited by elite schools. If you want an easy recruiting battle, go recruit against Arkansas State and Florida International (no offense to those schools). But then what kind of running back would you have? I hear the OLBs referred to as Dog and Cat, which I believe stands for Drop and Cover. Can you explain a little bit more about what that means? Where are they dropping? Who are they covering? And what skill sets are required for the two positions?
Thursday August 25, 2011 2:21 Ryan from Sacramento
2:26
Eric Hansen:
The Reader's Digest version is this: The Cat is usually the OLB who will drop down to play end if ND wants to show an even look (4-3). The drop has more pass-coverage responsibilities. Each has to set the edge on defense and keep the players funneled back into the middle of the field. The skill sets for both are speed, the ability to accurately read run/pass quickly, the ability to rush, play the run and cover, and be a physical presence. Where ND ran into trouble at both spots last season (especially early on) was setting the edge. A lot of plays got outside the OLBs, and being able to read the flat passes. Denard Robinson absolutely took advantage of that for Michigan last season.

All of the position competitions, it seems from everything I've been reading that the team is working more with each other trying to improve rather than "undercut" the comptition - is this sugarcoated or a result of Kelly's "next man in" way of doing things?
Thursday August 25, 2011 2:31 John Q Irish, Memphis TN
2:33
Eric Hansen:
I wouldn't call it sugar-coating. The philosophy worked and worked well for the Irish last season, and I think they've bought in. Now is everyone in a position battle holding hands and singing Kumbaya after practice? No, but it is a team with terrific chemistry.

Eric, I see the Vegas has the Irish at over/under 8.5 games this year. Looking at this schedule, how we finished the season last year and the caliber of players returning I personally believe Vegas' expectations are a little low for the Irish. I'd be a little disappointed if this team lost 3 games on this schedule with what we have coming back. Your thoughts? And do you have anything to share about Dorian Green-Beckham?
Thursday August 25, 2011 2:33 Marcus, Indianapolis, IN
2:37
Eric Hansen:
Let's start with Dorial Green-Beckham the nation's consensus No. 1 prospect. He's a tough read. Very quiet, big list of schools, no visit yet schedule to ND. I think you're going to have to wait this one out for a while. As far as the Vegas odds, I picked 9 wins. I think this team can do more, but I need to see it on the field. My questions have more to do with the offense than the defense -- and injuries can be a huge factor.

On to my question...why was the QB battle so close? Did Tommy make great progress or did Dayne fall back a little? There appeared to be consensus that Dayne was the better QB from the onset (recruiting ranking as well), it just caught me by surprise that it was as close as it was.
Thursday August 25, 2011 2:41 allen in Louisiana
2:48
Eric Hansen:
Let me expand on that a bit. Dayne had to come back from reconstructive knee surgery and did so ahead of time. He had, predictably, an uneven spring. The he knocked it out of the park in the summer and in the first week of training camp showed Kelly inside and outside what Crist was about. If Crist was playing at the level he was last season, he would have gotten beaten out. I'm not sure we know exactly how close it was, but Kelly keeping Rees invested with positive comments, I think, makes a lot of sense.

Re the earlier scheduling question: Does the Big Ten still have the prohibition on nonconference games after about the fourth game of the season? Prior to its adoption we palyed Iowa and Michigan State in November in the mid_60's (including a tie game I managed to get to in East Lansing).
Thursday August 25, 2011 2:52 John Arlington, VA
2:54
Eric Hansen:
The Big Ten doesn't like to do it. Those teams have, once the 12th game was added, but usually it's a team like Akron or Eastern Illinois and not Tennessee or ND. What will complicate it further is the impending 9-game league schedule. I will say this Northwestern asked for and was granted permission to play ND post-September in their upcoming series, so it's possible -- just not probable.

When BK says that Watt and Nuss are both going to get time on the offensive line, does he mean that Nuss will see time mostly when the guards are banged up or is it an actual time share? And would a possible time share negatively affect the always talked about chemistry or cohesion of the offensive line?
Thursday August 25, 2011 2:54 Mikey - Michigan

BK likes to rotate fresh guys in at times,. and Nuss could rotate in at either guard spot and even right tackle. Since the other guys on the line are used to playing with him, I don't think chemistry will be an issue.

Carlo plays with fire, but his improvement comes from the cerebral side. It's figuring out when to surge forward to stop the run and knowing when to run with the tight end. Do you expect to see much of Lynch, Tuitt, or Ishaq the first two weeks? It would seem that mobile QBs might play against the strengths of athletic but undisciplined youngsters who aren't fully aware of their role in the defense. Or does athleticism trump all?

The playing time at this point IS all about those three being disciplined. That's all that stands in their way. Lynch is the furthest along in that vein. The others are coming. The glass if half full, Matt. Depth, especially on the offensive side of the ball, is where the team is still building.

Eric, Several weeks ago Coach Kelly said that until last year Ethan Johnson did not experience "any" strength development for his lower body. Is that possible?

Yes, it had to do with injuries. He is now fully able to engage in that, and it's made a difference.

If Notre Dame goes to a BCS, are the Irish in risk of losing any of their coaches for head coaching jobs?

Always when you have success you are. Chuck Martin and ed Warinner will be on people's radars. Two young guys I think will evolve into outstanding head coaches someday are Tony Alford and Mike Elston.

Who do you see as the tougher opponent, Michigan or Michigan St? While MSU is more talented, UM is on the road and could be a circus atmosphere.

Michigan State, because they're more balance. I still have to be convinced Michigan can play defense.

Do you think our time of possession on offense being so low plays a role in recruiting top notch defensive talent? Would defensive prospects be wary of being on the field so much or would this be an advantage to pull these guys in?

With all the academic expectations, big-time football preparations/practices coupled with being so far from home for the 1st time, how are freshmen protected from 'homesickness'?

Eric, there's been a lot of conversation about a number of skill players taking their game's to the next level, but other than early in camp I haven't heard/seen much about TJ Jones. With a year of strength & conditioning as well as the second year in the system I expect him to make big strides this year. What are you seeing/hearing about TJ?
Thursday August 25, 2011 3:17 Patrick (Traverse City, M

Eric Hansen:
I'm hearing lots pf positive about TJ. The reason you haven't heard more about him is that there haven't been a lot of features written about him. I think that's understandable. People deal with death differently. Some want to talk openly. Some want to process privately. TJ fits in the latter category when it comes to the very sudden passing of his father. I think everyone respects that.

Are we all-in with Crist or do you think –God forbid- we get in a situation that Crist is not getting it done- that Kelly would pull the trigger. Another words if that situation would present itself would Kelly risk the season or opt to let Reese have a go at it before it's too late. The only reason I ask is Crist obviously passed every test except full contact. Football is still a contact sport- with that being said I have full confidence that coach knows who gives us the best chance for success.

I don't think Kelly will have a short leash, and I think that would be a bad idea if it is. But yes, contact will be a test. And that's why Rees is still getting 40 percent of the snaps.

Thanks for these chats, Eric, they are great. Did the fact that Nix didn't get the starting nod at NG say anything about his camp or is it like the other tight positions, he will play nearly as much?

Eric Hansen:
I'm not certain he won't start. If he does not, I still think he'll play the most at that position. You have to understand Sean Cwynar is a man at that position too. But he does not have the durability to play a whole game. It's a nice tandem.

Did you read the recent article in a New Jersey paper in which Savon Huggins (former ND recruit and current Rutgers Scarlet Knight) claims that BK told him he would change his entire offense from a spread to a power running game just to suit him? The odds of that being true are less than you actually running one of my questions.

Remember Mike, no wagering. I didn't see the article. And I don't believe BK would tell that to any running back.

Eric- you're the best (kissing up usually gets me better results). Do you think the Brian Kelly philosophy of recruiting three types of players (Big skill, Etc) versus recruiting by position helps or hurts the recruiting process for ND? It appears to help, but i can't help but be concerned about all of the position changes. Thanks and keep it up. Love the chat and all of the articles in SBT

Eric Hansen:
Kissing up does work. I hate to admit it. I do think Kelly's recruiting philosophy benefits him in the long run. If a kid knows and embraces he might be moved in the future, I think it decreases the chances he'll transfer down the road.

Eric, Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for the article published today about my son. I know you've written less than one third of his accomplishments. ND fits him well and he is a freeky player. Since 8 years old, he had managed to play all three sports (football, basketball and track) for every single year. I'll be in SB next week and will manage to stop and say hello. Again thank you.

That's going to have to do it. I have to run to a 3:30 meeting that I am technically late for (can someone write me a note?). Here are the winners or the ISRs. Please email me with your address (ehansen@sbtinfo.com" target="_blank" >ehansen@sbtinfo.com). The winners are: Jeff from Fort Wayne, Luther from Dowington, Pa.; Ken from Va.; Nick from Blacklick, Ohio. Thanks to everyone for the questions. There are some great ones I did not get to. Please join us next Thursday at noon. Cheers.
