Live Chat: Talk Notre Dame football with Eric Hansen(09/15/2011)

Eric Hansen:
Sorry for the late start. I promise I'll run laps afterwards. I'm ready for your questions.

Eric Hansen:
I am willing to relax the "no whining" rule a bit in exchange for a "no channeling Bob Davie" rule. Otherwise, no fighting, no spitting, no swearing, no bare feet and absolutely no wagering. Please include you hometown with your name and question. Off we go.

Eric Hansen:
Or not. LOL

[Comment From Terry from Des MoinesTerry from Des Moines: ]
Eric -- any more games like the last two and my wife is going to ban me from watching. Too much grumpiness after the game. Do you think we'll see Golson or Hendrix in short yardage situations this week?
Thursday September 15, 2011 12:14 Terry from Des Moines
12:16
Eric Hansen:
I sure would like to see it. Circumstances were not right in the first two games to do it. I can imagine noise and all the complicated fronts Michigan defensive coordinator Greg Mattison was throwing at the Irish in Ann Arbor made it not a good fit there. My condolences to your wife.

[Comment From Geoff in Grand Rapids MIGeoff in Grand Rapids MI: ]
HI Eric, thanks for the great work. If ND executed as well as you do, we'd be 2-0. Alas, we are not. Two questions, what is the mind set of the team after last week? Also, does our defense match up better versus a more accurate yet less mobile QB like Cousins?
Thursday September 15, 2011 12:16 Geoff in Grand Rapids MI
12:20
Eric Hansen:
Thanks for the kind words, but I think I'm 0-2 on predictions, so no future as a telephone psychic for me. I like the mind-set I'm seeing this week. I see a lot of resolve, a lot of getting down to business. It just seems like a more confident group than last week. I'll say this, Michigan State, as a team, is the most complete ND has seen this season and likely will see until late November. That's what really makes Cousins dangerous -- there's a lot of safety nets if he has a bad day. I do think the more conventional offense gives Brian Kelly the comfort level to use his depth on defense -- particularly Lynch, Tuitt, Ishaq and Niklas. That's a good thing for the Irish. The bad news is Cousins doesn't throw a lot of pop flies to his receivers.

[Comment From Jeff W. (Dowagiac, MI)Jeff W. (Dowagiac, MI): ]
Hey Eric great job covering ND football. When most people thought Floyd wouldn't play this fall, BK mentioned taking advantage of the TE depth by using multiple TE sets in the offense. Do you still think we'll see that this year?
Thursday September 15, 2011 12:20 Jeff W. (Dowagiac, MI)
12:22
Eric Hansen:
We've seen it some, but we might see it a little bit less -- at least in the next few weeks -- with Mike Ragone out for the season. Ragone may not have been the elite pass-catcher he was projected to be out of high school, but he was someone BK could count on to be close to assignment-perfect with his blocking. I do think you'll see that some against smaller defensive fronts -- say the service academies once Koyack, Welch and Golic are able to get into a rhythm.

[Comment From Andy-Glendale Heights, ILAndy-Glendale Heights, IL: ]
Did the game in Ann Arbor last week really happen? I think I entered a time warp in the 3rd quarter when I walked from the press box to the field and it never really happened. Biggest challenge this week mental or physical vs. MSU?
Thursday September 15, 2011 12:22 Andy-Glendale Heights, IL
12:23
Eric Hansen:
Still mental, but Michigan State's size is imposing. Everybody's big on that team -- even the water boys and girls.
Thursday September 15, 2011 12:23 Eric Hansen
12:23
[Comment From Steve from St LouisSteve from St Louis: ]
I heard Darby say hes 98% commited. Is this the guy that ends up decommitting. Seems like we always have one that commits early and then switches.
Thursday September 15, 2011 12:23 Steve from St Louis
12:26
Eric Hansen:
I'm telling you, if I never raised teenagers, I'd still have some jet black hair left and a smaller waistline. He's definitely projects as a guy who will have to be massaged up until signing day. He does plan to take another official visit and could take more. That doesn't sound like 98 percent to me, so maybe it's the new math. Having said that, as a coach I want that player to be sure. As a parent, I'd want my son to have no doubts. He still is way more mature for his age than I was at that age.

[Comment From Greg - south bendGreg - south bend: ]
Hi Eric, I see we are going to have three good juniors at the game Saturday. Did DGB actually cut his list a top five? Did ND make the cut?
Thursday September 15, 2011 12:26 Greg - south bend
12:29
Eric Hansen:
He did make a list. He's checking it twice... wait a minute, he's keeping it a secret. I think since he has not scheduled a visit to Notre Dame, I would say the odds are the Irish are not on that list. But remember, things can change, yet I wouldn't go buy a DGB jersey in blue and gold.
Thursday September 15, 2011 12:29 Eric Hansen
12:29
[Comment From Jim from White PigeonJim from White Pigeon: ]
What do you hear about Lynch and Tuitt in practice? Even though their young I would guess their speed and power would've helped against Michigan's read option because they could collapse the pocket.
Thursday September 15, 2011 12:29 Jim from White Pigeon
12:31
Eric Hansen:
I hear they are coming along well, but the choice not to play them, I think, was a wise one. It was assignment football, and I don't think they were ready for that. One mistake, and it could be a touchdown. I think ND's d-line handled it pretty well. It was the back end of the defense that looked young and inexperienced, which as we know they are not.
Thursday September 15, 2011 12:31 Eric Hansen

[Comment From Beth in Camp Hill, PABeth in Camp Hill, PA: ]
Eric, what is your prediction for Saturday? I don't even want to think about an 0-3 start.
Thursday September 15, 2011 12:31 Beth in Camp Hill, PA
12:31
Eric Hansen:
I may be on my way to my own 0-3 start (predicting), because I am taking the Irish 28-24.
Thursday September 15, 2011 12:31 Eric Hansen
12:31
[Comment From Matt in PhiladelphiaMatt in Philadelphia: ]
What happened to Gary Gray last week? He looked lost. The defense on the under thrown balls was horrendous. Do they practice that coverage? I hope they did this week, otherwise UM just gave the country the blueprint for beating the Irish defense.
Thursday September 15, 2011 12:31 Matt in Philadelphia
12:33
Eric Hansen:
We did not have the opportunity to interview Gary either after the game or this week after practice, so this will be steeped in the hypothetical. Tough, tough day from a guy who hasn't had many of those. He's going to get picked on this week until he shows he has pulled out of the funk. Maybe it was the lights and he had trouble tracking the ball? It was shocking to me that he struggled. The guy has been really solid most of his career.

[Comment From GuestGuest: ]
Dan - Indianapolis: Eric - Can't handle another week of national media talking about ND football mediocrity and irrelevance. Are you as concerned as I am with the coaching as it pertains to the lack of discipline on turnovers, penalities and play calling on third and short? Also, was there extra practice time for the secondary this week? Thanks for all you do to bring ND football to us!
Thursday September 15, 2011 12:33 Guest
12:37
Eric Hansen:
Dan. If Notre Dame is irrelevant, 7.5 million people wouldn't have tuned into watch the game. I don't think this is a mediocre football team either. Or undisciplined. They played tight, though. They've got to fight through that mental hurdle. As I wrote earlier this week, BK has been in this 0-2 hole before and only one of those five teams (Central Michigan in 2004) went on to a losing record (4-7). And that was actually a better mark than the Chips had under the previous coach the year before. I think BK said it best. The players need to play better and the coaches need to coach better. I still think this can be a good team.

HEY ERIC LOVE THE CHATS HOW DO YOU FEEL THE IRISH D WILL PLAY THIS WEEK AGAINST THE FIRST TEAM THEY WILL FACE THAT HAS A POCKET PASSER? ALSO ON A SIDE NOTE CAN YOU OFFER ANY INSIGHT INTO WHY THE SAME MEDIA THAT VOTED THE IRISH INTO THE TOP 25 ARE NOW SAYING HOW OVER RATED THE IRISH ARE, DO THESE PEOPLE REALIZE THAT ANYONE CAN GO BACK AND READ THEIR INTITIAL EVALUATION OF THE TEAM? THANKS YOU THE MAN

12:40
Eric Hansen:
I think Michigan State is going to score points, because of their balance and execution, but I think ND will play well enough on defense to win (if the offense/special teams doesn't turn it over 5 times). As far as the overrated business ... I can only speak for myself. I don't think this team is overrated, but I did overestimate how well I thought it would executive, how well Dayne Crist would play and how well they would play on special teams. I wouldn't worry about the cries of overrated. If this team can clean up its mistakes, it will not be looked upon as overrated at the end of the year.

[Comment From David (SE Indiana)David (SE Indiana): ]
2 questions: Is Notre Dame the best 0-2 team in the nation? Is there another team (besides Georgia) that's having as rough a start as we are?
Thursday September 15, 2011 12:41 David (SE Indiana)
12:45
Eric Hansen:
The Sagarin computer ratings rank Georgia as the 48th-best team and ND as No. 53. I think I'd take ND in that matchup. East Carolina is No. 76, BC 78, Fresno 79. All other 0-2 teams are ranked 100th or lower. I would say then there's not another team besides Georgia who fits in the "good" 0-2 team category, although I think E. Carolina will end up with a winning record.

Eric: Is this a "must win" for Kelly? At least as regards any further benefit of the doubt as to his "system?"
Thursday September 15, 2011 12:46 Colin
12:48
Eric Hansen:
I don't think so. This was a game a lot of folks, including me, counted as a loss prior to the season. But if they lose this week, you do have to keep an eye on team chemistry. Remember, neither of Kelly's previous two 0-3 teams had losing records. One of them evolved into a national title contender the very next season and then won a national title two years later. Being a college head coach with two decades of experience gives you a track record and some equity, I believe.

so any news on why the high amount of turnovers the last 2 games. I have never seen a notre dame team make this many mistakes. coach kelly doing anything to prevent this

12:49
Eric Hansen:
There have been a lot of factors -- a quarterback in his fifth start (he has five of the 10), special teams problems, etc. Absolutely Kelly is doing things to clean it up. We'll see if they work on Saturday.

how resilient is this team. if thy start 0-3 of 1-4, is this program completely off the rails?
Thursday September 15, 2011 12:49 bumper
12:50
Eric Hansen:
I don't question this team's resilience, not after they were 4-5 last year and turned it around. But each team is different, with different leadership and different chemistry. I don't see any cracks in the foundation so far.

People who have watched a lot of football and understand the game can. How could anyone in Michigan Stadium have believed in the Wolverines when they got outplayed for three quarters? It's the same thing.

Hi Eric, as always, great articles, also super postal delivery service from yourself - thks again!!! Q regarding players morale. Some of the criticism on blog sites, and Twitter has been disgraceful – players giving their best and the abuse they've gotten is not right. Manti and some of the other players seem disappointed about it but do you feel the players feel let down by all the stick they've been getting (also effect recruiting of players). I feel if you really support a team it’s at times like this that fans show their true colours - Go Irish!
Thursday September 15, 2011 12:52 Paul, Galway, Ireland
12:56
Eric Hansen:
Paul, nice to hear from you. Fans have a right to complain, rant, etc. I think some of them go over the line for college players, though. Would you treat your own son like that? I think it's fair in the spirit of being analytical. When it gets personal, it gets too creepy for me. I do think recruits look at that stuff and I've seen it change kids' minds before (at other schools). It's got to be frustrating, but there's still a lot to like about this team.

Hi Eric, thanks for the coverage and the venue. Im wondering if you could possibly ask Kelly to revisit his "unconscious competence" and where his team is. Its obvious to me they're not at that point, but how close are they?

Eric, thanks taking the time from your busy schedule to do the chats. I have been in the BK corner ever since the higher but I just was upset with him for the first time after reading your article last night. How could yesterdays practice be the first time since hes been here that they have went over 3rd and short situations full contact? How can he expect them to succeed in a situation they have never been in in practice?
Thursday September 15, 2011 12:58 Adam, Indy
1:01
Eric Hansen:
It's not the first time they've done third and short with full contact, but it is the first time DURING A GAME WEEK. It's pretty standard for most programs. You're balancing injuries against intensity. For Charlie Weis' first 2 and a half seasons, they not only didn't do full contact, they did it at walk-thru speed. Kelly is doing it at full speed, but not "taking the ball carrier to the ground." I would say if you measured the 120 FBS programs, Kelly's practices would be above average in their physical nature, but not extremely so.

You certainly can see better pass coverage from the Bremen Lions. They've got it going on this season. Right now, he's striking it up as one bad quarter surrounded by many good quarters. Let's see what happens on Saturday before we consider it a trend.

[Comment From JB in MishJB in Mish: ]
Eric, to piggy back on Matt from Philly about Gray and your response. He looked lost out there. It wasn't he couldn't track the ball in the lights; it was fundamental. As a DB, you've gotta track where the Ball is and your Player, and Gray just wan't doing that. On the blown coverage play to #10, I would've liked to see BK call a timeout there. Even though that stops the clock, maybe he could've settled down the D and got them back on track because the D are on their heels at that point, which is not good.
Thursday September 15, 2011 1:06 JB in Mish
1:08
Eric Hansen:
JB, like I said, I'm guessing with Gary. He's a guy who's overcome a lot in his life, so he's not soft. He's played some pretty good football at ND. He's considered a pro prospect. His play Saturday was baffling. Let's see how he responds this week. I expect him to respond well.

[Comment From Shaun from Columbus, OHShaun from Columbus, OH: ]
Eric - the ND Club of Columbus would love to have you back again sometime. Until that day, I have two questions in regards to conference membership and the events internally at ND which seem to suggest somethings might be going on behind the scenes: 1. No hockey conference announcement yet? Why Not? 2. Temple series moved or cancelled? If cancelled, is it to clear the schedule for non return games thus conference membership.
Thursday September 15, 2011 1:12 Shaun from Columbus, OH
1:12
Eric Hansen:
Shaun, thanks, would love to come back. You guys/gals rock. I think Notre Dame is keeping tabs on what's going on (I refuse to use the phrase "monitoring the landscape)." it always comes down to three key things for me... Is the NBC contract going away? Is the Big East ready to implode? Is BCS access being restricted in the future? If the answer is no to all three, they aren't going anywhere. I'm confused about the Temple question. Hadn't heard anything about that.

[Comment From KURT UTICA MIKURT UTICA MI: ]
Hi Eric, please confirm some of my thoughts from the Michigan game. Michigan is NOT a good football team. Denard was not intentionally or planning the under thrown passes (no matter what the ABC announcers say) but relying on a sandlot, chuck it and duck, manna from heaven passing game?
Thursday September 15, 2011 1:13 KURT UTICA MI
1:14
Eric Hansen:
Kurt, I think Notre Dame is the better team. Michigan has a long way to go, especially on defense and in its "traditional" running game. However, I do think it's a program moving in the right direction. I did not see/hear the telecast, so I cant' confirm the comments about underthrowing on purpose, but no -- no one throw pop flies on purpose.

Eric: All who follow the Irish closely love your reporting and perspective. So thanks. Your interview with Aaron Taylor brought up some good points regarding senior leadership and mental toughness. In your honest opinion, how do you see the veteran leadership and toughness of this team?
Thursday September 15, 2011 1:14 Kaz from Grand Rapids
1:15
Eric Hansen:
Kaz, thanks. It's being tested this week. I think it's a leadership group that needed to be more vocal, needed to be willing to take the team's fate into its own hands. I've seen more of that this week. and I like it.

Thanks for your insightful work. Two press conference questions: (1) What are the regulars' reactions to the interlopers asking too many, and too foolish, questions? [Please assume the interlopers don't read chat transcripts.] (2) What's one question you'd like to ask that unspoken protocol prohibits?
Thursday September 15, 2011 1:16 Moose, Ottawa, Canada
1:22
Eric Hansen:
Moose, thanks. I can only speak for myself in terms of reactions to other questions. I think everyone has a right to ask questions, whether they work into my particular angle or not. BK will give us as much time as we need to get in all questions, so it's never an issue. I think sometimes he gets a bit annoyed when the same question comes up over and over again during the week. What's the one question I'd like to ask? I guess I've never let protocol get in my way, so there isn't one.

Dave from nyc: What's happening w/ analysis on this team in that after twice being stuffed--dramatically---on short yardage plays, they don't go with fake and slant pass? And yes I realize how hypothetic this question is
Thursday September 15, 2011 1:23 Dave from NYC

Dave, given the overloading Michigan was doing with its defensive front, Tommy Rees should have checked into a pass play in those situations and Kelly has said as much this week.

[Comment From Irish fan from Irish landIrish fan from Irish land: ]
Eric, again thank you- for your honesty and integrity. While many writers and commentators have either said very little or flat out covered it up. Gary Gray blew coverage the entire fourth quarter. He looked as if it was his first game at the collegiate level. His lack of coverage gave Mich. their first score of the day and it only got worse form there. It appeared virtually that every pass in the forth was thrown to his side or his man. I have never in my life seen a debacle of that magnitude. Since he became a started in 2009 (22 starts total) he has a total of two interceptions. Three if you count the overthrow on Saturday when he was out of position. Compare that to Robert Blanton who has 6 INTs in 13 starts and a couple dozen more total tackles than him. Can you please explain why he deserves to be out there? Why was Bennett Jackson not given a chance in the fourth quarter? (He has a few inches on him to boot.) What really irks me is all the effort that the rest of the D had was all for not; moreover, many of them have played championship ball at a very high level this season. While the schedule may allow him to fake it for the next few games; I hope Bennett is ready by USC and for certain Stanford games. I don’t mean to chastise him, but, Kelly so adamantly defends him. WHY?
Thursday September 15, 2011 1:26 Irish fan from Irish land
1:30
Eric Hansen:
Irish fan, that was dangerously close to a manifesto, but given the team's 0-2 start, you are forgiven. Let's put it this way with Kelly sticking with Gray. I'm not sure what you do for a living, but let's say you are a rocket scientist and the guy next to you has been reliable for years. With one bad hour or two are you going to throw him out and plug in someone who has been playing the position for six months? If Darrin Walls was available, sure I'd make that move and then see how Gary responded in practice. But Darrin's with the Atlanta Falcons now. Bennett Jackson hasn't shown enough consistency yet. Remember, Gray was good enough to start ahead of Blanton last year. I'm not defending Gray's play in the fourth quarter, but I can understand the decision to stick with him.

Prepare to be bored to tears. Park my car, walk to the radio show location. Do 2 and a half our pregame show, walk to the stadium, spend the hour until game time preparing key stats/trends I want to look for during the game. Watch the game. Interview Kelly/players. Write two stories in about 2 hours. Drive home. Watch more college football as I assemble my top 25. Lights out.

We don't control the sponsors. That chat software company gets the money for those. Having said that, I kind of doubt Tommy Rees uses Nivea. As for Criqui, I don't hear the radio broadcasts, so I'll have to take your word on that. Terry Hanratty is a pretty high standard to throw at anybody.

What is going on with the timing of signaling in offensive plays? Seems like the tempo that Kelly talked up last season is almost that of a conventional 'huddling' offense.
Thursday September 15, 2011 1:34 Brad (Dallas)
1:36
Eric Hansen:
They have slowed the tempo. Kelly says that operation time is 18 seconds. The noise in Ann Arbor elongated that at times on Saturday night when Rees was trying to relay the plays to his teammates. Could the ND crowd do the same to Michigan State this Saturday?

If ND wins the coin toss this week do they defer to the 2nd half? Also, it appears Brindza not only gets good distance but excellent height on his kickoffs or is this a product of good special team players?

Any thought that BK's fiery attitude on the sideline is contributing to the team playing tight, ie being too afraid of making a mistake instead of just playing? Just a thought since many of these players didn't choose to play for BK and may not prefer his yelling???

It's a fair question, but I think if it really bothered them, they would have transferred. Look, this is the template he has won with at four different schools, so I don't think he's open to changing it.

[Comment From Matt in PhiladelphiaMatt in Philadelphia: ]
I was looking at the stats for the last two games and was shocked to realize Tommy is responsible for 5 of the 10 turnovers, in only 1.5 games, while Crist was responsible for 1. Is it becoming more apparent that BK just doesn't like something about Crist, because the leash is obviously not the same length.
Thursday September 15, 2011 1:44 Matt in Philadelphia
1:46
Eric Hansen:
Rees does have five turnovers, but he was much more productive in the times he's played. Even last year, Rees threw interceptions twice as often (per attempt) as did Crist, yet he had a slightly higher passer ratting because of a higher completion rate and better productivity per attempt. My read is that BK feels the turnovers will decrease with experience. He didn't necessarily see Crist's production increasing with experience.

Hello again! Why does BK keep trotting Ben Turk out there. It is clear he can not handle the spotlight. I though I read multiple times in the preseason & spring, even from BK that Kyle Bryindza was pushing him with the punting. It seems Kyle can handle the spotlight with the kickoffs what about the punting game? We have lost way too many yards in the field position battle the last 2 years.

Well, they seemed a little bewildered after the Michigan game, but that seems to have passed. I do think ND's strength in running the ball is going to open some eyes with Mahone and the others. Now they need to win a few games. But remember a lot of things go into recruiting. Academics, etc.

Dave, there you go. Your invite to join the ND Club of Columbus. Great group. As far as Akron? I like the Temple series better. It gets ND out to the East Coast, which AD Jack Swarbrick thinks is a plus for alums, recruiting and exposure. I'm not sure Akron gives you the same bang for your buck.

Eric not ready to give up on BK yet but it concerns me the yelling at players. not that I am opposed to it but what good does it do if he doesn't hold players accountable and keeps playing them. I like Tommy Rees but 5 turnovers in 6 quarters. back in 1986 Lou told Beurlein a mistake prone QB thta if he reached 7 ints that season he would be benched. Like to see Kelly telly Rees once he gets to 10 ints he's done for the season

Kyle, everybody's got their own style. You have to stay true to it. Yes, you evolve, as a coach, but I don't think this is something BK is willing to change. He did yell last year when the team was 4-0 down the stretch, so I'm not sure if there's a correlation.

Eric Hansen:
I'm not sure I want as far as Tom Brady, but I really believed in Crist's potential and I'm not sure in another time and place, it wouldn't come to the forefront. Rees definitely deserves the No. 1 spot. As to the second part of your question, there's just not a large enough sampling to answer that. But in the 30 minutes Crist played this season, he did not respond in a game situation the way I thought he would.

Why wouldn't Kelly see Crist's production increasing with experience? When he announced him as the starter, he said Crist had become a much better player - smarter, faster, more accurate - but then benched him after just 15 attempts. If Rees's productivity is hindered by continued turnovers, do you really think Kelly will refuse to hold Rees to the same terms he held Dayne? Will this have a negative impact on the team, the QB position, or Dayne?
Thursday September 15, 2011 1:56 Katy in South Bend
1:58
Eric Hansen:
Katy, it's hard to flip back and forth and keep continuity with the offense and with leadership. If Tommy turned into an interception machine, yeah, then maybe they do this. But the way he drove the team late in the Michigan game and late in the South Florida game gives him "preferred nation status" with Kelly -- fair or unfair.

What happened to Gary Gray last week? He looked lost. The defense on the under thrown balls was horrendous. Do they practice that coverage? I hope they did this week, otherwise UM just gave the country the blueprint for beating the Irish defense.

Eric Hansen:
It's not the first time they've done third and short with full contact, but it is the first time DURING A GAME WEEK. It's pretty standard for most programs. You're balancing injuries against intensity. For Charlie Weis' first 2 and a half seasons, they not only didn't do full contact, they did it at walk-thru speed. Kelly is doing it at full speed, but not "taking the ball carrier to the ground." I would say if you measured the 120 FBS programs, Kelly's practices would be above average in their physical nature, but not extremely so.

JB, like I said, I'm guessing with Gary. He's a guy who's overcome a lot in his life, so he's not soft. He's played some pretty good football at ND. He's considered a pro prospect. His play Saturday was baffling. Let's see how he responds this week. I expect him to respond well.

Kurt, I think Notre Dame is the better team. Michigan has a long way to go, especially on defense and in its "traditional" running game. However, I do think it's a program moving in the right direction. I did not see/hear the telecast, so I cant' confirm the comments about underthrowing on purpose, but no -- no one throw pop flies on purpose.

Thanks for your insightful work. Two press conference questions: (1) What are the regulars' reactions to the interlopers asking too many, and too foolish, questions? Moose, thanks. I can only speak for myself in terms of reactions to other questions. I think everyone has a right to ask questions, whether they work into my particular angle or not. BK will give us as much time as we need to get in all questions, so it's never an issue. I think sometimes he gets a bit annoyed when the same question comes up over and over again during the week. What's the one question I'd like to ask? I guess I've never let protocol get in my way, so there isn't one.

WHY?

They have slowed the tempo. Kelly says that operation time is 18 seconds. The noise in Ann Arbor elongated that at times on Saturday night when Rees was trying to relay the plays to his teammates. Could the ND crowd do the same to Michigan State this Saturday?

Any thought that BK's fiery attitude on the sideline is contributing to the team playing tight, ie being too afraid of making a mistake instead of just playing? Just a thought since many of these players didn't choose to play for BK and may not prefer his yelling???

Kyle, everybody's got their own style. You have to stay true to it. Yes, you evolve, as a coach, but I don't think this is something BK is willing to change. He did yell last year when the team was 4-0 down the stretch, so I'm not sure if there's a correlation.

Katy, it's hard to flip back and forth and keep continuity with the offense and with leadership. If Tommy turned into an interception machine, yeah, then maybe they do this. But the way he drove the team late in the Michigan game and late in the South Florida game gives him "preferred nation status" with Kelly -- fair or unfair.

I heard Bruce Heggie was named Director of Ball Security. Seriously though do you think the turnovers come to an end this week? What has Kelly done to address the problem?

If Bruce is in charge, the Irish go turnover-free. They address turnovers with ball security drills. Maybe they should try voo-doo. Let's see how it plays out Saturday.

That's going to do it for this week. Thanks for all the questions. I think we got to almost every one this week. Come back next Thursday at noon, and we'll do it again.
