Tsipis adds Duffy to GW staff

George Washington women’s basketball coach Jonathan Tsipis announced that former Notre Dame standout Megan Duffy has been named assistant coach at GW. Duffy spent the last three seasons on the sidelines at St. John’s.

“Megan is one of the brightest stars in the coaching world,” said Tsipis, who took over the job at George Washington earlier this month after nine seasons as an assistant coach at Notre Dame. “Her insight as a player both at the collegiate and professional level will be beneficial for the total experience of our student-athletes.”

As an assistant coach at St. John’s, Duffy helped guide the Red Storm to a 71-28 record, three straight NCAA Tournament appearances, and a trip to the 2012 Sweet 16. St. John’s upset Connecticut this season, snapping the Huskies’ 99-game homecourt winning streak.

nžNotre Dame coach Muffet McGraw issued a statement following the announcement that legendary Tennessee coach Pat Summitt had stepped down as the Volunteers’ head coach.

“I don’t even know college women’s basketball without Pat Summitt,” McGraw said. “She set the standards, and she set them really high. She has accomplished more than any other coach. I don’t know if anybody will ever surpass the records that she has set. I think she was someone who always wanted to give back to the game. She always had time for the coaches. At a convention, she always had time to talk with you about ... you could get out a paper and pencil and work on some X’s and O’s on the side with her. She wanted to grow the game of women’s basketball.”
