Live Chat: Talk Notre Dame basketball with Tom Noie(05/02/2012)

sbtnoie:
Back for another weekly chat about Notre Dame men's basketball the day after the NCAA rendered its ruling on now former Irish forward Tim Abromaitis.

Abromaitis was denied the chance to return to Notre Dame for a sixth season, and not a huge surprise. Disappointing in that the three-time Big East scholar-athlete cannot close out his collegiate career in something other than a warmup suit after he lost all but two games to a knee injury this past season.

With Abromaitis' future decided, attention now turns to 2011-12 team most valuable player Scott Martin, who also has applied to return for a sixth season. Word may come today, tomorrow or next week from the NCAA. Stay tuned.

To join the chat, simply ask a question and be sure to include your name and town. Piece of cake. Let's go.

Not shocked that Abro was denied but was hopeful after seeing a guy like Trevor Mbakwe at Minnesota get a 6th year after missing a year to a knee injury and another from a suspension due to a legal issue. NCAA proves once again that they are a joke. No consistency in anything. With Abro now gone for sure how does it change the scholarship situation moving forward? Does Coach just hang on to it for the next cycle or look for a late rising player in this cycle?

Good to hear from you. Notre Dame probably looks a little closer into the transfer situation now that Abromaitis will not return.

As for the NCAA, you can say the organization is a joke for a lot of reasons, but they've been pretty consistent with the sixth-year decisions.

Woa...woa.....woa....hear me out first before you say anything.

Every athlete at every level has a five-year clock to complete four years of eligibility. Abromaitis and Mbakwe, who were USA teammates in China last summer, both lost seasons to knee injuries this past year. Mbakwe lost another year because of an off-court legal matter, one that I believe he was found not guilty in.

Abromaitis had no such off-the-court issue and no family medical emergency that prompted him to miss his sophomore season in 2008-09. He simply sat out because there were not enough minutes for him.

Regardless of his solid academic standing and the fact that he owns two degrees from Notre Dame, the NCAA needed more to grant him a sixth year. He didn't get it because there was nothing else there. No extenuating circumstance, no injury.

As bizarre as it is to say, had Abromaitis had a brush with the law, like Mbakwe, and been forced to sit out a season, he very well would be back in a Notre Dame uniform next season.

Fair enough, and from most reports, Mbakwe is also a good kid. I guess the NCAA lack of transparency in these cases is most frustrating as Coach Brey said to you yesterday.

Andy:

Yep. And it's not like Mike Brey can just pick up the phone and call the people at the NCAA who make these decisions and ask about a timetable. The NCAA communicates only through a school's compliance office, which then forwards the messages to the basketball office.

And it's also not like an enterprising reporter (insert joke here) can call the NCAA and ask for an explanation as to why player A received a sixth season while player B did not. They talk only in generalities, which means, in circles.

Any idea why the Martin situation may not be as much of a certainty as once thought?, Going by what you had explained above, I can't figure out why he would be denied.

Matt:

Scott Martin and Notre Dame started this process in mid-December. It's now the first week of May. The NCAA has come back with repeated requests for more documentation/information regarding Scott Martin's decision to transfer and, most likely, reports on his father's medical condition.

It was thought to be a solid case, but the longer it goes, nobody over at Notre Dame can be sure. Notre Dame has been told that the NCAA is likely days or even hours away from a decision nearly every day since the end of March. Still nothing.

I can't figure out either why Martin would be denied, except for the fact that the NCAA might be of the belief that the explanation of Martin transferring because he wanted to be closer to home might not fly.

South Bend is not THAT much closer to Valparaiso than West Lafayette. But when you're dealing with something as serious as cancer, as the Martin family was, every mile closer to home really matters.

I was very surprised that Mike Brey seemed to make negative comments about the NCAA. He is always the diplomat in public, but do you get to talk to Mike Brey very much "off the record" and is he more candid with comments then he is "on the record" or in public?

Any beat writer that spends so much time covering a head coach will have his share of on and off the record conversations with the head coach. It's just the nature of our business. It's important that both parties understand what is and is not on and off the record during those conversations.

Any coach is far more candid in his off-the-record comments to members of the media. That said, there are few high-profile coaches in the country who are as candid about pretty much anything as Mike Brey.

Mike Brey very much wanted what I quoted him saying in today's South Bend Tribune on the record. A university spokesperson told me Tuesday afternoon that Coach Brey would not have any comment on the matter until a resolution of the Martin situation. I didn't necessarily agree, but I also didn't push it. I had a story to write.

I didn't even see Brey's call come into my cell phone while I was at the Tribune office. He left a message and said he had something to say about the whole matter and that I could call him back. So I did.

Back in 08 , Coach K had a group of college players to practice against Team USA. Do you know if he will have college players again on a practice squad? If he does, do you think any current Irish players will receive an invite?

No idea about Mike Kryzyzewski wanting to have the USA Olympic team practice against college players in preparation for the London Olympics, but I would doubt that anyone from Notre Dame joins that roster.

I don't know how the training schedule would work out but Notre Dame would likely be in summer school at that point. And to be honest, if Martin somehow doesn't return, this shapes up to be an important summer for the Irish in terms of building chemistry while adding guys like Zach Auguste, Cameron Biedschedi, Austin Burgett, Garrick Sherman and Eric Katenda into the mix.

I was at the Duke / Kansas game earlier in the year and noticed a lot of groupies waiting for the players after the game. I went to 6 ND games this year and never saw any special ladies waiting around for our players. Do you think South Bend is just lacking in the groupie department or we just have a bunch of ugly dudes on the team?

Kevin:

Congrats. Could be the funniest question of the year. Don't really know how to answer that - maybe all those good-looking groupies are probably trying to hang around all those good-looking beat writers that cover Notre Dame.

They're always hounding us about or laptops, our penchant for free meals and insistence of having a final stats book delivered to our seat when it's time to go to work.

Honestly, never noticed one way or another. All I care about when a game ends is the door to the locker room opens in a relatively short amount of time so I can get in, get my quotes and get my story done before it's on to the next game.

And a quick follow-up, as a beat writer, I wear many hats. One of those is to decide if and how guys like Eric Atkins, Jack Cooley and Jerian Grant can help Notre Dame win as many games as possible.

It's not about deciding whether any are groupie-worthy.

Now, back to our regularly-scheduled HOOPS chat.

Nope, because adding a transfer was not a viable option until Tuesday when Tim Abromaitis decided that it was time to move on and would not appeal the NCAA's decision.

It would be tough to host any transfer this spring and tell them, yeah, well, we like you, but here's the thing - we don't have a scholarship, but keep us in mind if and when one might open up.

As for a position of need? If a backup point guard who could transfer in immediately and offer about 5-8 minutes a game to give Atkins and/or Grant a break, he might want to call the Irish basketball offices. Soon.

I am interested in Eric Katenda and his preparation/mental state coming into the season. If you wanted to interview him right now, could you, or what would you have to do, or wait for, to interview him?

Eric Katenda will not be made available for interviews until the start of summer school. Katenda arrived in January and I had talked with him about four times for stories in the SBT prior to that. Once on campus, Katenda was rendered "off-limits" for any and all interviews by Mike Brey - something he has never done in his previous 12 years at Notre Dame.

Brey wanted Katenda to have no distractions as he made the adjustment to life as a college freshman while also trying to play basketball despite the loss of vision in one eye.

When Katenda is available to speak sometime this summer, the SBT will be there.

Mike Brey doesn't get angry to the point where he says things like he said about the NCAA, unless he feels strongly. Obviously he feels strongly about this situation. Why don't they appeal the decision?

Jeff:

There's really nothing to appeal - it would just be prolonging the process of Abromaitis moving on. In talking with Abromaitis, he knew back in march he had likely played his last game. He knew it during Senior Night ceremonies before the Providence game, knew it during the year-end awards program.

It was the longest of longshots from the start given that there is no reason why he sat out his sophomore season. It's time to start the next chapter in his life. Whatever he decides to do next, he'll likely be a success. A big one.

Likely. The way the Big East schedule is set up, the schools that Notre Dame played at home only this year (DePaul, Marquette, South Florida, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, etc.) will be road games this season.

The one added quirk to the schedule for 2012-13 will be that with West Virginia having already packed up and left for the BIg 12, each Big East team will have four repeat opponents.

An early guess for Notre Dame's four repeats? DePaul, Marquette, Louisville and Connecticut.

How about yours?

The burn will always be there, stuffed somewhere in the back of the closet in the basketball offices.

But given the status of the roster and the athleticism that returns and is coming in, Notre Dame should play at a quicker pace this year. Now not only can the Irish score, but they'll also be able to defend. It will be a good mix.

Solid choices. I'd expect Pittsburgh and Syracuse to be handed a gauntlet of road games in what likely will be their final seasons in the Big East. Technically, the schools are obligated to play two more seasons before moving to the Atlantic Coast Conference, but the Big East is willing to "negotiate" an early-out clause.

Given what's transpired between the teams the last few years, it's amazing that Notre Dame and Louisville have not bee repeat opponents every single season.
It's been high drama at its finest. OK, for many except that last meeting at the Big East Championship.

Jut the usual "it's on the radar and important to the future of both programs" kind of stuff. Don't expect ground to be broken in the coming months or years even. If so, great, but given how Notre Dame operates, it's likely years away.

If and when it's built, the practice facility would likely be wedged in the corner parking lot where the coaches currently park between Purcell Pavilion, Rolfs Aquatic Center and the lacrosse stadium.

Putting a practice facility in what is currently the north dome is not an option. Not if you want to do it right. And need to do it right.

I saw that special on Coach Cal that Willy was referring to and thought that Calipari was acting like a teenager. For a second I thought he was drunk. You can't be someone you're not at this level. Kids will see through it and you wind up looking more like a dope than someone a teenager would want to come play for, if even for a couple years.

Honestly, Calipari really isn't selling that "street cred" style with recruits, who are more intoxicated with going to college for one year, playing at a high level and then jumping for the millions of dollars of the NBA.

Anyone who thinks the UK program is any different needs to turn on the lights.

Jeff:

Ha! Welcome to the wonderful world of charter flights. There is a missed class policy at Notre Dame where athletes of any sport at one time were allowed to miss only three classes a semester.

Every sport is different, but say Notre Dame plays at Seton Hall on a Wednesday night in January.

The players go to class and practice on Tuesday, then eat dinner and head for their charter flight Tuesday night. They take a 90-minute flight to Teterboro, arriving around 10 p.m. They spend all day Wednesday in New Jersey before playing that night's game.

Immediately after the game, it's back on the bus, to the airport and aboard the waiting charter, where they're back on campus early Thursday morning and have to go to class Thursday.

If Notre Dame plays on the road on weekends, the Irish often miss no classes. If the Irish play on the road during the week, they likely miss one day. Charter flights have changed everything in terms of missed classes. Hard to believe that it wasn't too long ago - Brey's first and second seasons - when Notre Dame still traveled by commercial flight.

Funny story - still remember when Notre Dame traveled commercially and was on its way to Syracuse during the 1999-2000 season, Matt Doherty's first and only in South Bend. I was on the same flight as the team and there's Doherty in the aisle of the USAir flight to Pittsburgh handing out sandwiches to his players. Even offered me one. I declined.

Greeting Tom. How does the NCAA get away with the way they operate? It makes no sense to me. How can they justify not allowing a kid that exemplifies what it is to be a college “student –athlete” This is a travesty! It would be one thing if the NCAA would be consistent with their rulings; however, they operate with no rhyme or reason. In the last three years I have watched USC, OSU, U of Oregon, and U. of Auburn in football break or manipulate the rules with little to no repercussions. In the last year and half I have witnessed men's basketball crown U. Conn National champs and in women's basketball it was Baylor both teams admitted to several violations and yet they are still referred to as champions- that is according to the almighty NCAA. I cannot comprehend how the NCAA is allowed to continue to operate in such a lackadaisical way. Please help me to understand. A side note: I personally think that the Irish are a much better team when Pat the “Conn man” is on the court. While he gets credit for his shooting and ball handling- his defensive skills combined with his rebounding ability- makes him such an asset to have on the court at all times. This was not to compare him to Abro in anyway shape or form. Just wanted to give props to Pat for all his hard work effort this past season. GO IRISH!

Tom, I agree with you in that Brey should never act like a used car salesman like Calipari. If I ever see Brey giving man hugs to teenage basketball players I will never watch the Irish again (not really) but do you think it would be OK if an assistant acted like Calipari and did the whole "yo bro" "no what I'm sayin" stuff?

Rose:

In some ways, it's the assistants that sometimes have to be that way to get to know a recruit. The relationship between the assistant to the player often is different than the relationship between player and head coach. The assistant spends most of the time recruiting the kid, getting to know what makes him tick before the head coach comes in closes the deal.

Once the kid is part of the program, the assistants are also key is allowing players to vent their frustrations over playing time, roles, etc.

A coach has to stay detached from all that. Once he becomes a "buddy" to a player, that's when the relationship reaches a point of no return.

Probably not, but again, that's the NCAA for you. It was going to be hard, given the facts of Abromaitis' case, to justify a sixth season. There was plenty of hope, but false hope it turns out.

You can twist it any way possible - compare Abromaitis; situation to this case or that case of this player or that player - the NCAA never will discuss any reasoning behind any decision. Once ND receives clarification on Martin's 6th year, it will be time to 100% focus on the 2012-13 season. The team has the most potential in Mike Brey's tenure at ND. From a marketing stand point, what does ND need to do to increase season ticket sales, student attendance and the hype between now and leading up to the first game? The roster talent over the next couple of years will be unmatched. The ND community should be embracing the program!!!

I was a journalism major in college, not marketing. What needs to happen to make this program more of draw around town is not for me to say.

All I know is that people who didn't care for the program used to whine about it because of the dumpy arena. That was fixed. Then they whined that they never went to the NCAA tournament. Can't say that anymore.

It seems that people will always find something to hold against not supporting the program. Honestly, I don't know if this area is diverse enough to support three programs (hockey, women's hoops, men's basketball).

Hockey and women's basketball have found their niche. Men's basketball gets the leftovers and stragglers here and there.

We might be entering the most entertaining, and maybe important, era of Notre Dame basketball in decades......but will anyone outside the core fan base notice? Or care?

I don't know. That's scary.

Could have been both. Swanagan may also have gotten Ty Shine. All I know is it happened right in front of me at the old Meadowlands and Swanagan was called for an offensive foul in part because the guy he flattened on the pick hit the floor so suddenly.

I still dabble in the game - had major hops in college when I dunked during rec league games back in the old Fieldhouse at Dayton. Went for 27 one night as a sub in our Church League games out here in Granger.

So, what happens with Abro now? Surgically repaired ACL's usually take a year to heal, correct? Would he miss playing in Europe? Does he stay around South Bend to rehab with the doctors and trainers who have been monitoring him all this time? He'd have a practice partner in Ben Hansbrough, who moved back here to train, right?

Much of your question was answered in today's SBT story. Abromaitis remains on schedule in his rehab process - it will be five months next week. He resumed light workouts this week and even dunked.

He'll likely go to Europe for 2012-13 on a one-year deal where he'll knock the rust off his game and get his confidence back. Then he'll try to make a run at an NBA roster next summer, just as Ben Hansbrough is going to do this summer.

Mike Brey believes there's a place for Abromaitis in the NBA, especially when guys like Kyle Korver, Steve Novak and Mike Miller are cashing league paychecks. It will be about finding the right fit.

If hoops doesn't work out, Abromaitis can put his two degrees to use and be a success in the business world tomorrow if he chooses. Nice to be young again and have so many options.

Tom, Greetings from the Left Coast. Even though the Abro denial is disappointing, doesn't it make things a bit easier for Brey from a personnel standpoint? Had Abro returned, it would have created a bit of a logjam and made it much more difficult for Brey to juggle his lineup and give some of the younger players quality minutes. Doesn't this development, in some perverse way, make things less complicated for the Coach?

Pat Connaughton and Cameron Biedscheid just earned a few more minutes. Both are going to play a lot as it is, but now may be expected to do even more. Zach Auguste and Austin Burgett are one step further away from possibly sitting out the season to preserve a year of eligibility.

With Abromaitis done, everyone moves up a slot. May happen again depending on the Martin decision.

I notice that when you respond to questions about the potential lineups and playing time next season you focus almost exclusively on the three incoming recruits and Sherman. Do you believe that Katenda won't really be a factor in competing for playing time?

Kevin:

Sort of by design in that nobody knows what Katenda might offer. Sherman played two years at Michigan State and is more of a known commodity. So too on some levels are the three incoming freshmen.

But how does a guy go from losing vision in his eye to being the same player he was before his injury? What happens when he has to cut it loose in workouts or more importantly, against Big East-level competition.

Nobody really knows.

It's better to give Katenda as much time as he needs to adapt and adjust and get himself to a place where he can be an effective contributor instead of saying, 'Wow, wait until you see this cat. The guy's going to be a double-double machine!' That's not fair to him.

Katenda has shown signs in workouts and the occasional five-on-five situation, but let's be patient with his progress. He could surprise. He could level off to where he's just a serviceable practice player. Dealing with that type of injury and adjustment is going to take him time, something the roster can afford him to do.

Don;t know if that's a bridge that will need to be crossed, unless the NCAA just absolutely believes Martin could have helped his family out in West Lafayette as he did in South Bend.

Brey just wants an answer one way or another so they can start working toward next season instead of operating under a "What if....scenario." he also wants to help Martin through the next step of his basketball career. Each day that passes is one less day Brey has to help Martin choose an agent, study options, etc.

Ever heard of Demetrius Jackson? The Irish have one scholarship to offer the current high school junior class and it has one guy's name on it - Jackson's. He's exactly what they need - a guard who can get a shot and points for himself and distribute.

Am I the only one worried about lack of backcourt depth if anything should happen to Grant or Eric? Our options are Brooks (who's been found wanting as an outside player) a frosh who played underneath in high school, Pat C(who can't go to his left), maybe a walkon and possibly Martin. Forget about ACLs, grades and all the other things that can take a player out for a long time. Even foul trouble for either could be a disaster. I think the Cuse was the only game either missed major minutes this year, and the Cuse doesn't press. Who could help bring the ball up against a Louisville press?

Depth is thin at the guard spots for sure. As long as Atkins and Grant are OK, they're going to play. A lot. As much as Dragicevich was expected to help, his handling was a shaky situation, especially against pressure. Connaughton will have to be better and Biedscheid will have to handle.

Atkins or Grant go down with a serious injury, and Martin and Brooks may have to play guard. Yikes.

So I did.

And to be honest, if Martin somehow doesn't return, this shapes up to be an important summer for the Irish in terms of building chemistry while adding guys like Zach Auguste, Cameron Biedschedi, Austin Burgett, Garrick Sherman and Eric Katenda into the mix.

Soon.

But those kids must respond to that kind of street talk. Do you think Brey should change his act and move towards a Calipari approach to recruiting, it must work!!!

That door has closed with or without Abromaitis. Notre Dame has moved on to the point where it might be "Alex who?"

Dragicevich played in every game, started 10, averaged 20 minutes a game and 7 points a game. He was given the green light to shoot it every time he got it and wanted more.

Hope he finds it.

It's a done deal. Time to accept it and move on instead of wondering about the Baylors and the Connecticuts of the basketball world.

Or care?
