Notre Dame football commit Hunter Bivin missed two weeks of track practice for spring football at Apollo High in Owensboro, Ky., but it wasn't enough time for his competition in the shot put to catch up with him.

At Saturday's state championship meet in Louisville, the junior from Owensboro, Ky., earned the Class 3A title with a throw of 55 feet and 3.75 inches. The second place thrower was more than three feet behind.

"I'm pretty happy that I won, but I think I could have thrown a little bit better," Bivin said. "My nerves got to me a little bit. Overall I think I had a pretty good day."

Bivin said the time spent devoted to track will help when his senior football season rolls around.

"It's given me a lot of time to focus on weight-lifting because they go so good hand-in-hand like that," Bivin said. "Basketball and football during the season, you usually take it light in the weight room, but during track you can bust it every day and get a lot stronger."

Elmer qualifies for state

Fellow offensive line commit Steve Elmer fared well in Friday's Division I regional track meet in Auburn, Mich.

Elmer finished third in the meet with a throw of 49-8.5 to qualify for the state championships on June 2.

Elmer advanced by beat-ing the 49-7 distance for automatic qualification.

Butler receives invite

On Monday, cornerback commit Devin Butler was officially invited to Nike's The Opening camp in Beaverton, Ore.

Butler received the 86th invite to the camp, which gathers some of the nation's top high school football talent from July 5-8 at the Nike World Headquarters.

Butler tweeted multiple times about how excited he was to receive the invitation.

Two commits in top 100

CBS Sports Network recruiting analyst Tom Lemming released his updated Top 100 for the Class of 2013 on Wednesday and two Irish commits made the list.

Offensive lineman Colin McGovern ranked No. 75 and cornerback Rashad Kinlaw came in at No. 92. Both recruits stayed at the same ranking they were given on Lemming's first list that was released in April.

Elmer had been ranked No. 74, but dropped off the updated list.
